Four Eagles Score in Double Figures as Men’s Basketball Routs Southwest
HOBBS, New Mexico – The Texas A&M University–Texarkana men's basketball team secured a dominant road victory Thursday night, defeating the University of the Southwest Mustangs 80–44 in a complete team effort that saw four Eagles score in double figures.
TAMUT wasted no time setting the tone, jumping out to an early 8–0 run before the Mustangs called a timeout to regroup and get on the board. Despite the stoppage, the Eagles maintained control throughout the opening half, keeping Southwest at arm's length and carrying a commanding 38–19 lead into the break.
The Eagles caught fire offensively in the second half, shooting an impressive 58 percent from the field and 45.5 percent from beyond the arc. TAMUT poured in 42 second-half points to pull away and secure the 36-point victory.
Jarren Cook led all scorers with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 50 percent from three-point range. Alex Orr turned in an efficient performance, shooting 86 percent from the field, 66 percent from deep, and a perfect mark from the free throw line to finish with 16 points. Daryl Houston also added 16 points to round out the Eagles' double-digit scorers.
The TAMUT bench played a major role in the win, accounting for 41 points compared to just 10 from Southwest's reserves. The Eagles also controlled the glass, outrebounding the Mustangs 38–23.
With the victory, TAMUT improves to 15–7 overall and 12–5 in RRAC play.
Men's basketball returns to action on Saturday, February 7, traveling to UNT Dallas. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
