Men’s Basketball Soars in Home Opener, Defeats Philander Smith 109–96
TEXARKANA, Texas – The Texas A&M University–Texarkana men's basketball team improved to 1–0 on the season Tuesday night with a high-scoring 109–96 victory over Philander Smith at the Patterson Student Center. The Eagles showcased a balanced offensive attack and strong team chemistry, with five players scoring in double figures.
The Eagles came out firing in the first half, shooting nearly 49% from the field and hitting 10 three-pointers to build a 57–41 halftime advantage. While Philander Smith battled back in the second half, TAMUT maintained control with efficient ball movement and timely scoring to secure the 13-point win.
Jarren Cook led the offensive charge with 34 points, knocking down seven three-pointers while adding two assists and two steals. Deovaunta Williams followed with an all-around performance, tallying 26 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and four steals on 7-of-17 shooting.
Payton Chism continued to be the engine for the Eagles' offense, posting eight points, seven rebounds, and eight assists in 38 minutes of play. Off the bench, Jakari Livingston provided a huge spark, scoring 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while Daryl Houston contributed 10 points and four rebounds.
The Eagles' unselfish play resulted in 21 team assists, and they capitalized on 14 steals to create transition opportunities. TAMUT also showcased its depth, outscoring the Panthers' bench 33–14 and controlling the tempo throughout the game.
Inside, the Eagles edged Philander Smith 38–36 in points in the paint, while also adding 12 fast break points to keep the visitors on their heels.
With the win, A&M–Texarkana moves to 1–0 to start the 2025–26 campaign, marking a strong early showing under head coach Darion Brown and his staff.
The Eagles will return to action this Friday, November 7th, as they travel to Langston, Oklahoma, to take on the no. 4 ranked team in the nation, the Lions of Langston University. Tip off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the C.F. Gayles Field House.
