Softball Falls to Hosts, Faces Dordt Next
ASHLAND, Ore. - The No. 2 seed Texas A&M University-Texarkana softball team battled the defending NAIA National Champions and No. 1 seed Southern Oregon University Tuesday afternoon in the winner's bracket of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round, falling 5-2 at Laurel Park in Ashland, Oregon.
The Eagles move to 38-15 overall and will now face No. 4 seed Dordt University in an elimination game tomorrow morning at 1 p.m. CT (11 a.m. PT).
Southern Oregon jumped out to an early lead with a run in the first inning before adding three more in the second to take a 4-0 advantage.
TAMUT answered in the fifth inning after Jaquelyn Schmidt singled to left center and Kamryn Walker followed with a double down the left field line. Mackenzie Williams then delivered an RBI single to left to score Schmidt and cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Raiders added an insurance run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI double, but the Eagles continued to battle in the seventh. Schmidt led off the inning with her third hit of the game before Brenna Turbeville entered as a pinch runner and later scored after Victoria Clayton reached on a throwing error by the Southern Oregon shortstop.
Schmidt paced the Eagles offensively with a perfect 3-for-3 performance at the plate while Mackenzie Williams added two hits and an RBI. Walker and Kylie Malone each recorded doubles in the contest.
Alexis Snyder took the loss after striking out three in two innings of work. Charli Miller tossed two innings of relief while Rylee Glenn closed the game with two scoreless innings in the circle.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow morning in a win-or-go-home matchup against Dordt as they continue play in the Ashland Bracket of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round.
