Men’s Tennis Drops Competitive Match to No. 25 Firehawks
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Texas A&M University–Texarkana men's tennis team put together a strong effort but ultimately fell 4-2 to No. 25 Tennessee Southern in a competitive matchup.
The Firehawks secured the early advantage by sweeping the doubles point. The Eagles' tandem of Matias Penaranda and Jose Rodrigues dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 1 doubles, while Lucas Yamaguti and Fedir Zalievskyi fell 6-1 at the No. 2 position. The No. 3 doubles match featuring Marc Gonzalez Molina and Alvaro Tormo Lopez was left unfinished, tied at 4-4.
In singles play, the Eagles showed resilience, picking up two impressive wins. At No. 2 singles, Fedir Zalievskyi delivered a dominant straight-sets victory, defeating Quentin Ferron 6-3, 6-2. Lucas Yamaguti added another point for A&M-Texarkana at the No. 5 spot, cruising to a 6-2, 6-1 win over Daiki Ishii.
Tennessee Southern claimed the remaining singles matches to secure the team victory. Sebastian Romanos battled at No. 1 singles but fell 7-5, 6-1, while Matias Penaranda dropped his match at No. 3 singles 6-4, 6-1. At No. 4, Marc Gonzalez Molina pushed his opponent in a tightly contested first set before falling 7-6, 6-1. Jose Rodrigues fought in the second set at No. 6 singles but came up short in a 6-3, 6-6 decision.
Despite the result, the Eagles showed competitiveness against a nationally ranked opponent and will look to build on the strong singles performances moving forward.
