Nelson Earns 500th Career Victory as Eagles Sweep Saturday Matches
TEXARKANA, Texas — Texas A&M University–Texarkana head tennis coach Brian Nelson reached a historic milestone on Saturday, March 7, earning the 500th victory of his collegiate coaching career as the Eagles competed in Edmond, Oklahoma.
Nelson, who serves as the head coach for both the men's and women's programs, reached the milestone during Texas A&M–Texarkana's road matches against Bethany College and Southwestern. The achievement marks nearly two decades of success across multiple collegiate levels and programs.
Now in his first season leading the Eagles, Nelson has quickly made his impact felt. Both the men's and women's teams have opened the 2026 campaign with outstanding records, continuing the tradition of excellence Nelson has built throughout his career.
Nearly Two Decades of Success
Nelson's coaching career began at Seminole State College, where he built one of the most consistent programs in NJCAA tennis from 2007–2018. During his 11 seasons with the Trojans, Nelson's teams were regular fixtures in the national rankings and frequently finished inside the NJCAA Top 10.
His tenure at Seminole State included numerous standout seasons, highlighted by a 2016 NJCAA National Runner-Up finish by the men's team. Across his time there, Nelson guided multiple teams to top-10 national finishes on both the men's and women's sides.
Following his success in the junior college ranks, Nelson moved to the NCAA Division I level with the University of Wisconsin–Green Bay for the 2018–19 season, competing in the Horizon League.
Nelson then joined Southeastern Oklahoma State University in 2019, where he helped elevate both programs into national contenders at the NCAA Division II level. His teams consistently improved during his tenure, highlighted by:
- Great American Conference Champions in 2022,2023, & 2024 (Women)
- Multiple NCAA Division II Tournament appearances
- National rankings for both men's and women's teams
- Conference championship success and deep postseason runs
Under Nelson's leadership, Southeastern's programs reached new heights, with the women capturing conference titles and both squads earning NCAA postseason berths.
Continuing the Success in Texarkana
In his first season at Texas A&M–Texarkana, Nelson has continued that winning tradition. The Eagles have surged to strong early-season records, with both teams quickly establishing themselves as contenders in the NAIA ranks.
The 500-win milestone reflects Nelson's sustained excellence, leadership, and ability to build competitive programs across every level of collegiate tennis.
As the Eagles continue the 2026 season, Nelson's career achievement stands as a testament to the countless student-athletes he has developed and the winning culture he has established throughout his coaching journey.
