AUSTIN, Texas – Texas A&M University-Texarkana men's basketball wrapped up its regular season on the road Thursday night, falling to Huston-Tillotson 86-83 at Branch Gymnasium.
The Eagles won the teams' previous meeting at home, 62-56, behind 13 points from Deovaunta Williams. Williams led the way again in the rematch with 28 points, but the Rams overcame a double-digit deficit to claim the victory.
TAMUT put on a shooting clinic in the first half, scoring 46 points on 65% shooting from the field, including 73% from three-point range. The Eagles carried a 13-point lead into halftime.
Despite continuing to shoot over 50% from both the field and beyond the arc in the second half, TAMUT was limited to just 17 shot attempts, down from 26 in the first. Huston-Tillotson capitalized at the free-throw line, making 83% of its 30 second-half attempts. With just over three minutes remaining, the Rams took their first lead since the opening minutes and held on for the win.
Williams paced the Eagles with 28 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-7 from three-point range. Rodney Mason II and Daryl Houston grabbed five rebounds each, while Payton Chism recorded four assists, joining the program's single-season leaderboard with 80.
TAMUT closes out its regular season Saturday, Feb. 22, against North American University in Stafford, Texas. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m.
