DALLAS, Texas – The Texas A&M University–Texarkana baseball team put together an explosive offensive showing Tuesday afternoon, sweeping a non-conference doubleheader from Dallas Christian College with 16–12 and 15–2 victories.
The Eagles combined for 31 runs on 33 hits across the two games, blasting five home runs and piling up 29 RBIs in an impressive all-around performance.
"After the last couple of weeks, I was really proud of the team for staying focused and taking care of business today," said head coach Chase Brewster. "Mid-week doubleheaders are always adventurous because you are calling on guys to step up in between conference series that might not normally be called on. More than a few guys made their season debut today and played well, so that was awesome to see."
Game 1: Texas A&M–Texarkana 16, Dallas Christian 12
The opener turned into a back-and-forth slugfest, but the Eagles used a pair of big innings to secure the win.
TAMUT struck first with three runs in the opening frame before adding four in the third. After Dallas Christian answered with a five-run sixth to tighten the score, the Eagles responded in emphatic fashion—scoring five runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to regain control.
Ahmar Donatto powered the offense with a home run, two RBIs, and three walks. Austin Kerns delivered a huge performance, driving in three runs with a homer while scoring three times. Tobin Jones also went deep and added an RBI, while Brandon Sheets homered and finished with two hits and an RBI.
Michael Caputo chipped in three RBIs, and James Provencio added two as part of a balanced attack that saw nine different Eagles draw walks.
On the mound, Frank Tinoco earned the win with two innings of relief work. Sloane Reves closed out the final two innings, allowing just one run and striking out two to secure the victory.
Game 2: Texas A&M–Texarkana 15, Dallas Christian 2 (5 innings)
The Eagles carried their offensive momentum into the second game, erupting for 10 runs in the second inning to break the contest open early.
TAMUT finished with 19 hits in the five-inning run-rule victory. James Provencio led the charge, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Michael Caputo was dominant at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a triple, two doubles, and three RBIs.
Rian Cellers added two hits and an RBI, while Jason Armendariz recorded two hits and drove in a run. Tobin Jones and Colton Wombles each plated two runs as the Eagles totaled five doubles and a home run in the nightcap.
Micah Bandy picked up the win in relief, tossing two innings while allowing just one run and striking out three. The pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts and limited Dallas Christian to four hits in game two.
"We were able to limit our mistakes on defense, which helped for a good day," Brewster added. "Hitting five home runs also contributed, but our pitching staff was a lot better, especially game two. We are headed in the right direction."
Texas A&M–Texarkana will look to carry its momentum into Red River Athletic Conference action this weekend, traveling to face Jarvis Christian University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday.
